A MAN slit his partner’s throat, minutes after she gave birth in an Elche hospital and then told him that their relationship was over.
The woman, 28, was moved to Vinalopo Hospital’s ICU with a deep stab wound, while her partner, 37, has been arrested by the Policia Nacional.
The incident happened at around 4.00am on Thursday in the postpartum unit of the hospital where the victim was recuperating after having her baby.
Staff heard screaming and when medics entered the room, they saw blood everywhere.
The woman suffered several stab wounds, including one deep in her throat.
The man had up to 12 wounds caused by a blunt object, with some reports suggesting that she fought back with a hammer.
The assailant also tried to attack at least two members of the medical team with a knife before he was immobilised by security staff.
The newborn baby was unharmed since he was not with his mother during the assault.
Initial investigations suggest that the man went into a rage when his partner told him that she wanted to finish their relationship.
The Policia Nacional in Elche are continuing their inquiries.
