Mallorca braces for hurricane winds: Flights are delayed and public areas sealed off over fears of uprooted trees – as experts warn when the most severe weather will hit

MALLORCA is batting down the hatches today as hurricane force winds of over 120km/hr are set to blow into the island.

According to state weather agency Aemet, the most severe weather will be experienced between 2pm and 3pm.

The strong winds will first blow in from the west of the island, Aemet added, bringing ‘very heavy rains’.

The storm captured brewing from the beach of San Antoni in Ibiza.

It comes after one British tourist was killed after being swept away by a flash flood on the island, with another Brit still missing.

Meanwhile, airport authority Aena said there are widespread delays at Mallorca airport and across the Balearics today, but said there has yet to be a cancellation.

The extreme weather is being caused by a so-called DANA, an isolated area of high depression.

The whole of Mallorca is on an orange alert, the second most serious, until at least 6pm this evening.

Winds will be between 90-120km/hr, but could exceed this, entering hurricane force territory.

Up to 90mm of water could fall per square metre per hour in some areas, Aemet warned.

Emergency services have asked the public to be extra cautious as the weather poses a significant risk to life.

Mallorca authorities have today sealed off part of its beach promenade in Palma over fears of trees falling over and injuring people.
