British widow whose husband, 59, was ‘killed by a neighbour with a gardening hoe’ in Spain appeals for help to pay €18,000 in legal fees

A BRITISH woman living in Spain is appealing for aid after her husband was brutally murdered with a garden hoe.

Sarah Allwright is raising funds to cover the legal costs of pursuing justice for her late husband, who was killed in a violent attack in Zurgena, Almería.

Martin Allwright, 59, was attacked by a neighbour who allegedly stormed out of his property to strike him on the head on August 12.

The assailant reportedly objected to Martin, who died in hospital five days later, walking his dog ‘too close to his home.’

Martin Allwright, 59, was attacked on August 12 while walking his dog. He died five days later.

The neighbour was initially arrested by the Guardia Civil on a charge of attempted homicide and the case is in the hands of an investigating judge.

But now Sarah has found herself with a bill of €18,000 to hire a criminal lawyer to prosecute the alleged killer, with an initial €9,000 required up front.

“My name is Sarah Allwright. I am the wife of Martin Allwright. Martin was the victim of a brutal attack on 12th August 2024,” Sarah wrote on her Gofundme page.

“Martin was hit on the back of the head with a sharp garden implement.”

“He received brain surgery and was in hospital for a week, but sadly lost his life on Monday, August 19.

“I have engaged a criminal lawyer in order to punish the man who did this. The fees for this will be at least €18,000. I have had to pay the initial payment of €9,000 this week.”

“I am asking for help with this as this cost is huge to me. It is not something I ever thought I would have to do. Any help would be so much appreciated.”

Sarah said that Martin had ‘a great many friends’ and described him as ‘always up for a laugh.’

“His great passion was Exeter Chiefs rugby and it will be sad that he won’t be watching the start of the new season with me,” she added.

So far Sarah has raised €4,255 of the €9,000 target in just four days, with dozens of people from the local community and beyond chipping in.
