Drink and drug driving crackdown is launched in Spain’s Andalucia from today as police ramp up checkpoints

THE Spanish Traffic Authority (DGT) has announced that it will be stepping up its efforts to catch drivers who are under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

From Monday, August 19 to Sunday 25, traffic police will be conducting increased checks on all types of roads across Andalucia.

This initiative comes in response to alarming statistics showing that alcohol and drugs are a major contributing factor in fatal road accidents.

In 2022, nearly half of all drivers (45%) killed in accidents tested positive for alcohol, drugs, or a combination of both.

With the summer holiday season in full swing, and many people enjoying the region’s vibrant nightlife, the DGT is particularly concerned about the risk of drink-driving.

The campaign will target both rural and urban areas, with a focus on popular nightlife spots and roads with high traffic volumes.

The DGT has stressed that ‘the only safe blood alcohol level is zero.’

“Driving under the influence not only puts your own life at risk but also the lives of others. We urge all drivers to be responsible and to plan their journeys in advance,” a spokesperson said.

Last year’s August campaign on Andalucian roads saw 876 out of 42,284 drivers test positive, proving the importance of preventive measures.

In addition to increased police presence, the DGT is also launching a public awareness campaign to educate drivers about the dangers of drink and drug driving.

The campaign will highlight the devastating consequences of accidents caused by intoxicated drivers, and will encourage people to choose designated drivers or use public transportation if they plan to drink.
