GOVERNMENT officials in the Balearics are investigating whether a new Katy Perry pop music video shot in Formentera may have caused environmental damage.
Footage was taken on the protected sand dunes of the islet of s’Espalmador which is part of the Ses Salines de Eivassa and Formentera natural park.
The regional environment ministry said that the production company did not apply for permission to carry out the shoot.
WATCH:
Perry recorded the video for her song Lifetimes around Ibiza and Formentera.
Scenes feature the American singer dancing and jumping in different locations, including urban areas, a busy nightclub and in natural landscapes, such as the s’Espalmador dune system.
That was done within an area that is blocked off by ropes and fencing indicating clearly that entry was prohibited and also included all the recording equipment.
The General Directorate of the Natural Environment pointed out that it does not regard it as an ‘environmental crime’ but more of an infraction as the use of cameras and video recorders are permitted.
Nevertheless, it stated that prior permission was required from authorities.
The dunes of s’Espalmador make up the best preserved dune system in the Balearic Islands with ‘great ecological value’ according to the Balearic Government on its tourist website.
S’Espalmador is a private islet located in the north of Formentera and has been part of the Ses Salines de Ibiza and Formentera Natural Park since 1980.
It is approximately 2.9 kms long and 800 metres wide.
