Young lifeguard is fighting for his life in Spain after almost drowning in a swimming pool

A LIFEGUARD has been hospitalised in a serious condition after a near-fatal drowning at a swimming pool in Madrid.

The youngster is believed to have come into trouble while cleaning a communal pool in a residential complex on Calle Torquemada, in the Hortaleza district.

According to the 112 emergency service, the worker was sucked into the pool’s drain and became stuck at around 4pm on Wednesday.

It is not known how long he was submerged under water.

Policia Nacional officers happened to be walking past the pool when the incident occurred and they rushed to pull him out of the water.

Paramedics later stabilised the man and he was transferred to the Ramon y Caja hospital in a serious condition.

He was breathing and did not suffer a cardiac arrest, sources said.
