Biggest fireworks night of the year will light up the sky on Spain’s Costa Blanca this weekend

ALTEA hosts its massive Castell de l’Olla firework display this Saturday evening in the biggest summer night of lights and colours on the Alicante province coast.

Thousands of people will gather at Playa de la Olla to enjoy the impressive 30- minute spectacle that illuminate the night sky.

The sight of firework reflections in the clear sea is part of a unique spectacle that has made the Altea event a draw for visitors from Spain and abroad.

ALTEA’S SPECTACULAR DISPLAY

Declared a Festival of Regional Tourist Interest, the display was first staged 36 years ago after being created by local pyrotechnician Blas Aznar.

He gathered up all the fireworks had used at displays throughout the year to create something special for his community.

That has gathered pace over the decades and now around 50,000 people- in a municipality with a 22,000 population- are expected to watch on Saturday night.

The show starts at 11.55pm and runs until 12.25am.

Most people have a picnic on the beach but there are those who rent boats or go to the Albir Lighthouse to enjoy the Castell de l’Olla in its maximum splendour.

Altea mayor, Diego Zaragozi, says an important thing for non-local residents is to get to the area early.

“The ideal thing is to arrive in time because we are talking about a weekend in which there are several tens of thousands of people moving around here,” he warned.

Around 200 people will be working to guarantee the safety and comfort of the attendees and 1,500 car parking spaces have been enabled.

August is a great time for firework fans in Alicante province with Elche having its annual hour-long world-famous Nit de l’Alba display on Tuesday night.
