Tap water warning in Spain: Supplies are 'not fit for human consumption' in these areas on the Costa Blanca

TEULADA City Council has announced that water is unfit for human consumption in a large part of the Alicante province municipality.

The authority has introduced restrictions on using domestic supplies for drinking, cooking, and food preparation, but can be used for personal hygiene.

It blames the drought situation in the Marina Alta region and the order is in force until further notice.

TEULADA

Health officials have classified water as unsuitable for consumption in Teulada 1-Casco Urbano and the surrounding area as well as Teulada 3-Arnella Moraira.

In June, they recommended some areas not to drink water due to a high degree of salt presence, caused by a lack of rain.

The main opposition party on Teulada council, Compromis, has demanded urgent measures to help residents.

It has demanded why the Partido Popular-led authority has not provided enough information on the ’causes, risks, and duration’, of the crisis.

Compromis has forced the conveying of an extraordinary council plenary meeting to get answers from the mayor, Mayor Raul Llobell.

Demands include the suspension of water bills while tap water is undrinkable and the distribution of bottled water plus the creation of temporary supply points.

They also want a detailed explanation over the situation from the water company Hidraqua and the Teulada-Benitatxell water consortium.

Tap water is still drinkable in Benitatxell despite excess salt levels, with warnings in force for residents who are on low sodium diets.
