ONE of the many culinary treats enjoyed by locals, tourists and expats alike on Spain’s Costa del Sol are espetos, skewers of fish – usually sardines – grilled over an open flame, leaving them with a delicious smoky flavour while also being moist and tasty on the inside.

The person who prepares the Andalusian specialty is known as an espetero, and one of these chefs has just taken the prize for the best sardines on the costa in an annual contest.

The winner is Alfonso Marin, from Los Leones chiringuito in Torremolinos, an establishment that counts on 60 years of history, and has been run by four generations of the same family.

Marin took the prize at the 10th edition of the espeto competition, held on August 3 at the Playamar beach in Torremolines.

There were a total of 20 entrants, according to Malaga Hoy, and for the second year running, Marin managed to emerge victorious.

As well as espetos, he also prepared a separate piece of skewered fish that was cooked on the same wood fire.

As winner, Marin took home a €1,000 prize, while the runner-up received €500 and the third finalist €300.

For anyone who wants to try the prize-winning espetos, the Chiringuito Los Leones is located on the Carihuela seafront promenade (Nerja street) in Torremolinos, Malaga province.
