Electric hail storms and crippling heat to grip Spain this week – these are the affected areas

MORE extreme weather is on its way to the Iberian peninsula this week, with forecasts of electric hail storms and crippling heat from weather service Meteored.

Temperatures are predicted to exceed 40C once again before the weekend, in the valleys in the southern half of Spain as well as in the Castilla-La Mancha region. 

What’s more, storms and heavy downpours are also predicted, and they could be accompanied by lightning as well as winds of up to 80 to 90kph. 

State weather service Aemet, meanwhile, has issued yellow alerts for high temperatures in Toledo and Cordoba provinces today, with the mercury likely to hit 40C.

Areas of Andalucia, Castilla-La Mancha, Aragon, Balearic Islands, Castilla y Leon, Catalunya, Extremadura, Madrid, Murcia and Valencia region are also on the same alert.

The storms are likely in Aragon, Catalunya and Valencia. 

Today, Tuesday, will also see the arrival of a weather front from the Atlantic in the northern regions of Galicia and Asturias, bringing with it heavy rain that will spread from the west to the east.

The Spanish Pyrenees will see storms, showers and even a chance of hail.

The electric storms are forecast for Aragon, Valencia, the Pyrenees and the inland areas of Catalunya, and may also make an appearance in the east of Castilla y Leon and La Rioja.

As well as the rise in temperatures that will particularly affect the south of the peninsula, the Canaries and the Balearics in the coming days, the weather phenomenon known as calima – a Saharan dust cloud – will also arrive in the south east of the peninsula and on the Canary Islands.
