A SPANISH man aged 36 was tragically killed in the northwestern city of Vigo in the early hours of Saturday morning, after a fairground ride broke at the local fiestas and sent him flying into its surrounding metal fence.
According to a report in local daily La Voz de Galicia, the victim, Ivan Castaño Hervella, was on the Saltamontes (Grasshopper) ride with his partner when the accident happened.
At around 2am one of the arms of the attraction broke, as the ride was moving in reverse.
He was flung out of his seat, and was left with his head trapped between the railing and the seat of the ride.
His partner was also sent flying from the seat and fell on top of the victim, and was left unconscious.
She later refused medical attention and was in a state of shock, while ambulance crews could do nothing to save her partner.
The fiestas were suspended after the tragic accident, while attendees feared that there had been a fire after two fire service trucks appeared on the scene.
