NEW speed cameras are going to be installed between Marbella and Coin on a notoriously dangerous stretch of road, in a bid to bring down the number of accidents.
The Andalusian Junta, or regional government, will put in two cameras on the A-355 highway in Coin, to improve safety along a four-kilometre stretch dubbed the ‘death road’, which saw a total of 10 people lose their lives in traffic accidents last year alone.
The cameras will be installed at kilometre 0.95 and 4.4, according to radio network Cadena SER, in an effort to bring down drivers’ speeds.
The regional government has already made efforts to improve safety on the road, by painting a red line in place of a white line to stop vehicles from making dangerous overtakes.
The red line on the road is the first to be used in the Andalucia region.
What’s more, four kilometres of barriers have also been installed, while rumble strips are now in place.
According to Cadena SER, the road was opened in 2014 with an expected volume of traffic of 7,000 vehicles a day.
However, it is currently being used by nearly 20,000 vehicles a day, including heavy goods vehicles.
All of these factors have contributed to the number of accidents and the dangers on the road.
