Earthquake alert for Gibraltar and Spain: Moderate chance of tremors between today and Thursday, warn experts, with other Mediterranean countries placed on ‘high’ risk

GIBRALTAR and the south of Spain are facing a ‘moderate’ risk of an earthquake in the coming days, an earthquake forecasting centre has warned.

As well as the British Overseas Territory, a moderate alert has been put out for Italy, Poland, Romania and Bulgaria among others.

Those at ‘increased’ risk are Albania, northern Greece and Syria.

However, Armena, southern Greece, Turkey and Iran are facing a ‘high’ risk between July 29 and August 4, according to Quantectum.

The alert has been triggered by ‘the passage of active tectonic waves’, with forecasting models indicating that Turkey and the eastern Mediterranean are most at risk.

Various forecasting models show the ‘highest shear traction field’ running along a Mediterranean line that starts in Gibraltar, passes through southern Spain and France and heads east.

The highest local fault instabilities will be in Albania, Greece, northern Iran, and Turkey, with smaller ones in Gibraltar, Romania, Italy, Poland, and the Caucasus.
