Taoiseach Simon Harris said there was so much ‘promise and personality snatched away in a terrible accident’.

Clodagh’s athletics club Parnell AC said: “Parnell A.C. are truly heartbroken to share the devastating news of the passing of Clodagh Phelan, one of our juvenile athletes and friend to many of our younger athletes”.

“Clodagh was a beautiful, spirited child and a great athlete who excelled in many sports, not just athletics.

“Her family Valerie, Liam, Will, and David and extended family are in our hearts, thoughts and prayers at this difficult time, “ the statement concluded.

Rathdrum Rugby Club said its members were ‘stunned by the tragic news of the passing of our dear club star’.

The club said that Clodagh was ‘a rare talent with an outstanding future ahead of her’.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and we will support them in every way,” it added.
