Baby girl is killed by freak rockfall at a popular tourist beach in Spain

A BABY has been killed by a freak rockfall during a day out at the beach on the Balearic Islands.

The accident took place on the popular Migjorn beach in Formentera at around 9.37am.

Medics raced to the scene and transferred the girl by helicopter to the Can Misses Hospital in Ibiza. Tragically, she did not survive her injuries.

Her father was taken to a hospital in Formentera where he was lighlty injured and treated for bruises.

The child’s mother was not at the scene at the time of the accident.

The family had chosen an area on the beach that was sheltered by an overhanging ledge made of clay-like rocks.

While the father was holding his baby shortly before 10am this morning, huge chunks of the rock face suddenly fell from a height of around two metres and struck the pair.

Policia Local have since cordoned off the affected area, which measures around 50sqm, in a bid to avoid further accidents.

The tragic incident has shocked the local community, reports Spanish media.
