AROUND 50 people were left injured on Tuesday after a coach suffered a spectacular accident while travelling from Barcelona to Tordera in the Catalunya region.
Two of the occupants of the coach were critical, and a further three in a serious condition, according to local press reports.
The vehicle, which was carrying around 60 members of staff from the Inditex clothing group (which owns Zara, among other brands), ended up wedged vertically in the entrance to a tunnel, with the driver’s end stuck at the highest point of the entrance.
The crash took place at around 9am on the C-32 road between the municipalities of Santa Susanna and Palafolls.
The driver of the vehicle was the last to be freed from the wreckage of the accident, but did not suffer serious injuries.
Emergency crews carried out triage on the scene to determine the worst injuries from the accident.
The mayor of nearby Pineda de Mar, Xavier Amor, told the TVE Canal 24 Horas rolling news channel that a hall building had been made available for emergency crews to treat the injured.
“We are in constant contact so that we can help as best we can,” he said.
The regional Mossos d’Esquadra police force said that they were pursuing two lines of inquiry: a burst tire, or driver error.
