SPORTING SUCCESS: The Knee, Hand and Shoulder Unit of the Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology Service of Hospital Quirónsalud Marbella deals with many golf, tennis/padel  and watersports injuries

The Knee, Hand and Shoulder Unit of the Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology Service of Hospital Quirónsalud Marbella has seen a high rate of consultations for sports injuries derived from playing golf, tennis/padel and water sports.

WHEN an injury occurs to the knee, hand or shoulder, the main objective of specialists is to recover full, pain-free mobility in a way that guarantees a quick recovery in the shortest possible time and with minimum complications.

Dr Lucila Keil, expert of the Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology Service at the  Quirónsalud Marbella hospital, explained: “The most modern and minimally invasive therapeutic options are sought that offer us the best results”.

The Knee, Hand and Shoulder Unit is a reference point for the development and application in the surgical room of new techniques. “We perform arthroscopic assistance in wrist and hand fractures, arthroscopic shoulder treatments, microsurgery techniques for the resolution of nerve and tendon lesions of the hand, injury of the rotary sleeve, shoulders instabilities…and much more.”

Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive approach that, according to the doctor, ‘enables us to act inside the joints without the need for cuts in the skin. It is therefore less painful, significantly reduces the risk of complications and the recovery times are shortened’.

This is highly valued by patients, especially in the sporting field where an injury can mean the loss of the entire season.

The unit has seen many sporting injuries. “We have a high rate of consultations for injuries derived from playing golf, tennis/padel and, more and more, injuries linked to nautical activities such as kite surfing”, points out Dr Keil.

“We continue to incorporate new techniques into our portfolio of services that enrich the scientific options  for our patients. Four neurosurgeons specialising in spinal cord surgery have recently joined the team: Drs. Antonio Carrasco, Antonio Selfa, Miguel Domínguez and Laura Cerro.

“They are professionals with a solid background in minimally invasive spinal surgery and whose activity is getting a very good reception among our patients”, says Francisco Rodríguez Argaiz, Head of the Service of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology of the Hospital Quirónsalud Marbella.

In this case, the most prevalent patient profile is that of middle-aged people with spinal disorders that do not improve with symptomatic medication.

By segments, it is the lumbar region, where the majority of pathologies are concentrated followed by abnormalities at the cervical level.

In the opinion of Dr. Argaiz, the main differential factor of his team is ‘the cohesive and coordinated work, with extensive experience in the field of our specialty, and the constant updating with the incorporation of the latest technologies’.
