ONE PERSON died and two others have been treated after a fire at a wooden cabin on an illegal campsite in Benidoleig, Alicante province.

The blaze broke out on Saturday at around 11.35 pm with the Guardia Civil confirming the death of a 65-year-old German man.

Another man, 61, was taken to Denia’s Marina Alta Hospital after inhaling smoke while an 83-year-old man was treated for shock but did not require hospitalisation.

Guardia officers from Calpe are investigating the cause of the blaze that destroyed the property.

Firefighters arrived at the scene to find the entire wooden home engulfed in flames and the deceased man inside.

Fire crews from Benidorm, Benissa, and Denia not only had to extinguish the blaze, but also to prevent it spreading to neighbouring wooden chalets.

Two nearby swimming pools were used to provide water to bring the fire under control with work finishing at 7.00 am on Sunday.

Benidoleig mayor, Pedro Segui, told the Informacion newspaper that the campsite was operating without a licence and had contained ‘illegal constructions’.

He added that despite the campsite’s status, people stayed still stayed there, mainly from ‘other countries’.
