VALENCIAN government inspectors have made a surprise visit to an Orihuela Costa nursing home after complaints of rat and cockroach infestations.
As previously reported by the Olive Press, an investigation by ReCoVa which represents families and users of residential homes in the region made a series of allegations about the Savia Villamartin home.
ReCoVa called for the government to inspect the 120 bedroom facility which happened on October 23.
It’s president Esther Pascual said pests were not the only issue and criticised a ‘lack of workers’ as she claimed there were only two nurses along with a ‘shortage of medicines’.
Pascual added that she had tried to get the Orihuela Prosecutor’s Office involved for three years but ‘without response’.
Valencian officials appeared unannounced on Monday at Savia Villamartin- stating that the home was on its visiting list despite the recent rise in complaints about it.
The delegation was led by the regional secretary for the social and health system, Emilio Argueso, accompanied by a team of inspectors.
Employment contracts of all staff members were demanded along with documents detailing shift patterns to check that there are enough workers to help the residents.
The kitchen, common rooms, bedrooms, and exterior areas were inspected and documents and reports have been requested.
Savia Villamartin has not commented on the allegations and the inspection.
