NETFLIX have commissioned and scheduled seven new Spanish shows in a bid to replicate the success of Money Heist and Elite.
In April, Money Heist (Casa de Papel) was the world’s most in demand show, according to data from Parrot Analytics.
The seven new shows are set for release in 2021 and will include everything from documentaries to drama. Here’s what to watch out for next year:
- Feria
Netflix returns to the success of teen-drama Elite with a new horror show Feria by the same creator Carlos Montero. Feria will be filmed in Ronda and tell the tale of two Andalucian sisters who discover their parents are monsters. - 800 Meters
In the documentary genre, 800 Meters analyses the events that led to the attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils in 2017. Carried out by Spanish youths who seemed to be happily integrated into society, the documentary series questions how and why this act of terror occurred.
- The Wanninkhof Case
Following on in the true-crime genre, The Wanninkhof Case revisits the trial that followed the 1999 murder of Dutch-Spanish teenager Rocio Wanninkhof in Mijas. In 2001, the estranged lesbian lover of Rocio’s mother was charged with the crime. But her innocence was proven when DNA evidence pinpointed a convicted sexual offender as the killer. - The Time I Give You
Goya-nominated actor Alvaro Cervantes stars in The Time I Give You, a series that follows his character Nico’s break up with girlfriend Lina (Nadia de Santiago, who co-created the series). - Hate
Spain’s latest stand-up special stars Dani Rovira of rom-com Spanish Affair fame. Rovira’s comedy show Hate (Odio) aims to entertain and inspire viewers anecdotes from his recent cancer recovery. - The Beast
Inspired by Pan’s Labyrinth and The Orphanage, new series The Beast attempts to terrify viewers who follow the lives of a young family living in an isolated cabin in the woods with a threatening presence lurking outside. - Idol
Idol follows the life of a young Spanish singer who mimics the nation’s most loved star and his biggest inspiration. The protagonist Lazaro gives up everything in his pursuit for recognition.
