The Spanish Minister for the Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, has promised to up Spain’s game in the fight against climate change.
She made her pledge this morning at the BloombergNEF annual summit in London, which brings together policymakers, industry experts and financiers.
Ribera is one of the summit’s key speakers, which include European Climate Foundation CEO, Laurence Tubiana, and Poland’s Climate Minister, Michal Kurtyka.
Every participant has emphasised the need for action.
“We are in a key moment [for the energy transition] and Europe needs to step up,” said Ribera, who is a member of several advisory councils and initiatives on climate change.
“We are witnessing that everything we had already identified is happening faster,” she said, referring to the climate vulnerabilities exposed by COVID-19. “Think about oil and mobility patterns. They’re cultural patterns that are there to stay.”
Although details are currently lacking, Ribera has said that the Spanish government wishes to establish industrial value chains across the country using solar and wind projects.
With any luck, said Ribera, Spain would go ‘far beyond’ the 2030 targets for emissions reductions set by the European Commission.
The news comes shortly after Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced that Spain would spend €27 billion on green energy between 2021 and 2023.
Poland also pledged today to accelerate their clean energy transition.
