CUSTOMS officials at Malta International Airport have detained two Spanish passengers carrying 14kg of cannabis between them.

The pair arrived in Malta from Seville yesterday and was directed for a luggage scan upon arrival.

After the X-ray had flagged suspicious items, customs officials searched the luggage of both passengers, finding 7.60kg of cannabis in the first piece and 6.35kg in the other.

A physical search of the passengers also yielded a small plastic bag of white powder, which tested positive for cocaine.

The couple and the narcotics were then handed over to the Police Drug Squad for further investigations.

The Duty magistrate has been informed about the haul and court experts have been called in to assist.

The smugglers are expected to appear in court soon.

Customs officials play a key role in the war against drugs, especially now during the pandemic.

This is the second seizure on the route between Sevilla and Malta in recent weeks and the third from Spain.
