FIRE CREWS from the Alicante area battled an overnight forest blaze in the Sierra de Fontcalent, which is popular with hikers.
Flames reached the top of the hilly range with tricky access for the firefighters who had to access the site on foot.
A helicopter was drafted in to help extinguish the fire which started sometime after 10.30pm last night(September 21) on the southern slope.
The blaze was put out after around four hectares of scrubland was destroyed.
A forestry brigade unit stayed in the area during the morning in case the fire restarted.
