IT was tragic day yesterday along the Costa del Sol with a drowning on one end and an attempted suicide on the other.

Tragedy first struck at around 9:20am in Torremolinos when a 70-year-old came into trouble while swimming in the sea.

He was brought to the shore on Playa Carihuela where paramedics could do nothing to revive him.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene and a routine investigation was launched to verify the facts.

Just over an hour later and on the western side of the coast, a woman tried to take her own life on Estepona beach.

At around 10:45am, the emergency 091 number received a call alerting authorities to a woman 100 metres out at sea who appeared to be drowning.

Three Policia Nacional officers arrived at the scene, with one jumping into the water and bringing the woman to shore.

The officers discovered the woman was suffering from personal issues and had tried to take her own life.

They remained with the woman until paramedics arrived and she was taken to hospital with mild symptoms of hypothermia.
