A MAN has been arrested after allegedly stabbing his wife to death on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
The Colombian-born 29-year-old, known as Jaime, is suspected of murdering his partner, Sara, 26, from Leon.
He is believed to have knifed her in the neck during a row at an apartment in the San Isidro neighbourhood of Tenerife.
The shocking incident took place this morning at the flat owned by Sara’s grandma where the trio lived together.
The suspected murderer is believed to have picked up a knife in an argument with Sara, while her grandma tried to defend her.
She then called the Guardia Civil on the man after he allegedly attacked her granddaughter.
Officers then arrived, finding Sara dead and Jaime with what looked like self-inflicted wounds, before arresting him.
Sara had worked as a programmer for six months at the Technological and Renewable Energy Institute (ITER).
Her brutal death is Spain’s 53rd gender violence (women killed by their partners or ex-partners) killing this year.
It comes on November 25 — the day chosen by the United Nations (UN) to raise awareness of the violence women around the world are subjected to.
Spain’s gender violence death count stands at 1,028, after records began in 2003.
