THE first snows of the season have hit the Valencian Community during a cold blast of polar air predicted to last until Sunday.

The icy weather front that has put the northern provinces of Galicia, Asturias and Castilla y Leon on orange alert for 30cm-deep snow reached the interior of Castellón on Thursday.

Granular snow was witnessed in parts of Utiel, Valencia province, while the Els Ports area of Castellón was left with the first white carpet of the season.

OH SNOW! The first snow of the season reached the Els Ports of Castellón on Thursday

It comes as Spain’s met office AEMET has predicted the mercury to drop to 4 degrees on the Costa Blanca on Saturday.

Orihuela, Alicante and Elche are predicted to see temperatures of 6 degrees, while Denia in the see will brace for a milder 8 degrees.

In the Costa Blanca interior, Alcoy will drop to 3 degrees while higher altitude areas will teeter above 0.

Snow is likewise predicted to fall on mountainsides over 500-700 metres.

Temperatures are expected to rise again on Sunday.
