A COSTA del Sol town is hoping to become one of the most cycle-friendly in Andalucia with the opening of a new stretch of bike lanes.
Estepona will have more than eight kilometres of cycle paths once the new 1.5km section running from the town’s leisure park northwards is finished.
The works are part of the council’s €7 million master plan to free-up space on the town’s congested roads and encourage more residents to swap their cars for pedal power.
As part of the initiative, the council is also planning to increase the length of cycle lanes along the coastline.
There are currently 18km of cycle-paths along Estepona’s ‘coastal corridor’ and the town’s officials want to increase this to 22km by 2020.
The council is also promoting bicycle tours throughout the city, in an attempt to encourage more people to make use of the extra cycle routes.
