CATALAN president Quim Torra has condemned the Barcelona riots as another 33 arrests have been made and 80 people are in hospital receiving treatment.
Nine democrats and civil society leaders were imprisoned this week for organising a referendum in 2017 for Calatan independence.
Protesters took to the streets and violence and rioting has ensued, with the city on lockdown as of last night.
Groups of hooded faced off against riot police by the Mossos d’Esquadra in Barcelona, the fight taking place against a backdrop of fire, burning cars, hurled stones, acid and Molotov cocktails.
According to the Ministry of Interior – the department responsible for public security – 33 people have been arrested and 80 have received medical assistance.
Torra said after midnight: ” There is no justification for burning cars or for any vandalism. This has to stop.”
