A BRITISH expat has been found dead after going missing during a hiking trip on the Costa Blanca.

The unnamed Briton was first reported missing by his wife at around 1.30pm on Tuesday after he failed to return from the Montgo Natural Park near Denia.

According to reports, the 56-year-old had phoned his wife and told her he felt unwell before he made another call to say he was on the mend.

The corpse of the unnamed expat was found between a shooting range and the Montgo Mountain at about 7pm following a short search by land and air.

Police, firefighters and a helicopter all took part in the search, with the body being spotted by the latter.

A spokesman for the rescue team said: “The hiker who had disappeared in the Montgo Natural Park has been located. Unfortunately he had died.”

The Brit is reported to have lived in the area.

A routine investigation has been launched but there is believed to be no foul play involved.

The area is regarded as one the most beautiful hiking trails in the region.
