A BRITISH pensioner has died after plunging into the sea during a hiking trip.
The 87-year-old was found unconscious in the sea at a nature reserve after splitting up from his group.
The man’s fellow walkers were the ones who discovered his body, at the bay of Cala del Barco near Cartagena.
The group raised the alarm at around 7pm on Saturday, in the Calblanque Regional Park, where they had been walking.
The park has been a protected natural area since 1987 and a nature reserve since 1992.
A spokesperson for local emergency teams said: “The emergency services were not able to save a British man aged 87 who died yesterday afternoon while he was walking in the Calblanque Regional Park, in the municipality of Cartagena.
“We were informed at 6:57pm via a call from a member of the group of walkers who said that after separating from the group, they had found him unconscious and floating in the sea by some rocks where he is believed to have fallen for reasons that are not yet known.”
An investigation is now underway and the results of a post-mortem are expected today.
It is not known if the man was on holiday or was an expat.
