Brit arrested with 10,000 date rape pills in carry-on luggage at Alicante airport

DATE rape drugs take away your freedom, until you take away the freedom of their traffickers.

A British man has now been arrested after Guardia Civil found nearly 10,000 zopiclone pills in his carry-on baggage at Alicante airport.

The hypno-sedative drug, used to treat insomnia, tranquilises the nervous system and is only available on prescription in the United Kingdom.

SPIKED: According to the UNODC, zopiclone facilitates ‘sexual abuse’

According to guidelines from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), zopiclone facilitates crimes of ‘sexual abuse’ by stripping a victim of their will.

The man, 47, was caught on May 22 boarding a flight to the United Kingdom.

He has been released back to his Torrevieja home on charges of a crime against public health.

It comes after an Irish woman, 62, was arrested in January with 5,640 zopiclone pills in her luggage.

The woman, also based in Torrevieja, was attempting to fly from Alicante to Ireland.

Guardia Civil said there was no ‘apparent’ relation between the two.

They have both been released on charges awaiting trial.
