THE Spanish senate in Madrid has approved the imposition of direct rule over Catalunya.

It approved invoking Article 155 by a margin of 214 to 47, with one abstention.

It comes minutes after the region’s parliament voted to declare independence from Spain.

Spanish prosecutors are now considering charging Catalan leader Carles Puigedemont with ‘rebellion’.
