LIONEL Messi’s charitable foundation has helped more than 1,600 Syrian children go back to school.

Since the civil war began in 2011, the Barcelona forward’s charity has created 20 classrooms for displaced children caught up in the conflict.

The 29-year-old Argentinean star’s interest stems from the personal hardship he suffered as a child.

Diagnosed with growth deficiency at the age of 11, for three years he needed nightly injections to help strengthen his legs.
