Speed cameras removed without explanation from A7 accident blackspot on Mijas Costa

A BRITISH expat has demandedย an explanation forย the removal of speed camerasย from a notorious accidentย blackย spot.

Michael Goosey,ย w h o s eย house overlooksย theย A7 in Mijas Costa, cannotย understandย why officialsย have mysteriouslyย removedย the average speedย cameras that went in twoย years ago.

According to Goosey, 62,ย a retired teacher fromย Cheshire, the cameras thatย kept drivers at the speedย of 80km/h between junctionsย 201 and 206 aroundย La Cala and El Faro wereย removed a few months ago so that workers could repaint the bridges.

However, although the work ended over one month ago, the cameras have still not been put back.

In previous years there hadย been many accidents at theย notorious blackspot, withย various sharp curves.

โ€œItโ€™s ridiculous,โ€ said theย president of the La Joyaย neighbourhood association.

โ€œIโ€™ve been told by aย public official that they willย not be switched back on.

โ€œMeanwhile, accidents areย now happening here regularlyย again as drivers haveย started going faster thanย the 80km/h limit.

โ€œThe cameras along theย five kilometre stretch hadย a positive effect on peopleโ€™sย speed.

โ€œFar from deactivatingย them, the authoritiesย should be putting more inย place because itโ€™s very dangerous.โ€

The General Directorate ofย Traffic, responsible for theย cameras, did not confirmย to the Olive Press whetherย it intended to return theย cameras.

In a statement, a spokespersonย said the radars wereย placed โ€˜where they are consideredย most necessary.โ€™

  1. The average speed cameras were only ever I stalled as a pilot scheme to see what effect they would have. They were removed when the council refurbished the footbridges on the A-7.

The new state-of-the-art cameras that can detect speeding and whether you are wearing your seatbelt etc have already been installed in Malaga, and perhaps they wish to install those cameras in the area between El Faro & La Cala?

Either way I absolutely agree that new cameras must be Installed again as motorists have been speeding past me the last weeks in excess of over 140kmh!

  2. Dear Michael, I suggest we put camera’s in your home to monitor you! Besides, I drive that route frequently and those camera’s did nothing but create a dangerous confusion with unknowing fast cars suddenly mixing together with slow cars. The real intent and only result was to put more of our money into the pockets of the already corrupt Spanish authorities. Good riddance to this nasty speed trap!
