EDUCATION is the best weapon in the fight against domestic abuse, a former Spanish government minister has said.

Inmaculada Montalbán claims the axing of civic education classes from schools over the past decade has entrenched gender stereotypes and led to an increase in attacks against women.

Forty eight women have been killed by their partners in Spain so far this year and in 2014, complaints against partners grew to 126,742, a 1.5% increase on 2013.

“The justice system acts when violence has already taken place,” she says. “The best vaccine against violence is education,” she said.
