A NEWBORN baby dumped in a rubbish bin has been saved by police.

Guardia Civil officers in Madrid discovered the baby inside a plastic bag, stuffed inside a rucksack, in an underground waste container.

They were alerted to the situation after a man walking his dog heard cries coming from the container in Mejorada del Campo.

Fire services assisted the rescue of the baby, who is between one and two weeks old.

Police are appealing for information about the parents and the baby is said to be in good health but being kept in a hospital in Madrid.
