Animals are a regular feature at festive events but along with tidings of goodwill, too often do we hear of animals suffering abuse for our entertainment.

Last month a donkey had his back broken in a display in Cordoba, while dozens of camels were bound and crammed into containers transporting them to sweet-filled celebrations in the Canary Islands.

Amid all these joyful celebrations can we not spare a thought for those whose rights are too often disregarded for profit and entertainment?
