Martin Scorsese and HBO team up for new series about conquistador Hernan Cortes

MARTIN Scorsese and HBO are teaming up for a new drama series based the on Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes’ expedition through the Aztec Empire.

The pilot episode for ‘Cortes’ is to be produced and directed by Scorsese and although Benicio del Toro will be an executive producer he has supposedly also expressed an interest in playing the main role.

Cortes was appreciated for extending the Spanish Empire in the 16th century but on the other hand he is responsible for the mass murder and fall of one of humanity’s great civilizations.

The series will focus on him as well as Malinche, the Mayan girl who stood by him, and the Aztec leader Montezuma whom he befriended and then imprisoned.
