Spanish man set himself on fire outside job centre

Malaga e

A SPANIARD has attempted to kill himself outside a job centre in Malaga.

The 36-year-old set himself alight at 1pm yesterday after pouring petrol on himself.

He was rushed to hospital with second degree burns to 63% of his body.

“He was clearly desperate after struggling in this existing recession,” said a local union boss.

It comes as Spain saw the biggest drop in the dole queue for six years with 100,000 people landing jobs ahead of the tourist season.

  1. I believe one of the main functions of government is to protect and care for its citizens. When people are talking their own lives because of the financial situation they find themselves in, then clearly government is being derelict in its duty towards the people.

From austerity, the raising of VAT the increases in utilities, and throwing good money at bad banks, this government seems to be doing everything possible to make things worse for the people. Why it has not been overthrown yet is quite beyond me.

  2. I briefly caught an article about someone ‘high up’ in the Spanish government who was talking about abolishing the minimum wage there. Could someone explain to me how that would help?

  3. “Why it has not been overthrown yet is quite beyond me.”

Overthrown and replaced with what, Hugh? Spain will have to leave the EU and devalue their currency to permit growth to return to the economy, and even that is not guaranteed to save Spain. Spain is paralysed; it has no plan B.

  4. No plan A, no plan B. Jesús what a country! Lately the ¨solutions¨ just mean cooking the books. The corrupt PP and Rajoy are so desperate for good news that they´re jumping all over and singing about the new supposedly positive unemployment numbers. Fact is, unemployment always drops in May. That said, the actual number of Spaniards on paro is higher than last year. Almost all the new jobs are temporary and will be eliminated again in September/October. This country has dug itself into such a hole it´ll take another 30 years to climb out. Sadly, there will be a lot more unrest and tragedy to come.

  5. Ditto to all above comments: Why oh why is the truth of the terrible struggle the Spanish people are facing here is not being broadcast to Northern Europe. Is it because if the reality was shown daily the markets would react in such a negative way to force the downfall of the Euro?? Spain should have never been allowed to join the Euro but of course the corruption that ruled here was also driving the EU and in the corridors of the ECB.. all figures are tarnished with lies.. so many are unemployed, at least 10% more than published, the young, the disabled, self-employed and those not being paid for months of work who are not able to sign on reflect the truth. It will end in a disaster.
