THE family of a cyclist who went missing near Nerja have returned home to the UK fearing the worst.
The wife and children of 63-year-old Gordon Simm, who went missing in the Chillar Canyon area nearly three weeks ago, say they have nearly given up hope of finding him.
Keen mountaineer Simm embarked on what should have been a day-long ride from Nerja into the nearby hills.
When he still had not returned the following day, his wife Wendy informed local authorities who began in depth searches with helicopters, dogs and volunteers.
The Guardia Civil believe Mr Simm may have lost his way in misty conditions.
Just who is doing the proof reading for this article – was he hiking or cycling.
Earlier articles indicated he had rented a mountain bike to ride up into the deeper mountain part of the hike. There is a five Kilometer dirt road up from the Nerja Caves area. From there he was supposedly going to cycle a bit further where it starts to get steeper, and hide the mountain bike in the bush and hike up into a beautiful gorge then down a steep decline trail, then further up the Rio Chillar. At least that’s what the earlier report indicated. The area he was hiking is spectacular but with sheer cliffs and a narrow path. At present the weather in the Nerja area is very hot, but when he left the weather up in that area of the mountains was misty and cloudy. Everyone here remembers when the Dutch lady was rescued after I think 18 days, but she was stuck along a ledge where there was water flow, and she was very, very lucky to survive. Let’s hope for the best!
In the eleven years that I lived in Spain I lost two friends, in seperate accidents, who both drove their cars off the road less than 200metres from their homes. In both cases it took nearly a week of ‘intensive’ searches by various authorities before they were found by a passing member of public.
Im back a week now to Ireland, and as of sun 19th there has been nothing. His wife was talking to local restauranters in the san juan de capistrano urbanisation I stay in, and he did take a bike, I hope he is found, so his wife can have closure, how she was able to leave and fly home over those mountains where he is somewhere is hard to grasp.
