MOBILE phone giant Nokia has made a Spanish faux pas.
For its latest handset – Lumia – actually means ‘prostitute’ in Spanish.
The little-known term – literally translated as hooker or call girl – has quickly made a comeback as Nokia has been the subject of extensive mocking on the internet.
One user even posted on Twitter: “If Lumia is prostitute in Spanish does that make all Nokia 710 and 800 owners pimps?”
In 1983, the beer company Coors used a catchphrase which was translated into Spanish as ‘Suffer from diarrhoea.’
No idea what you´re talking about. Didn´t know Lumia meant prostitute, at least in Castilian Spanish.
But there are some other examples: the Mitsubishi Pajero or the VW Phaeton (Feto). Nice names.
El Mundo recognises the word “lumia” as signifying “puta”. http://www.elmundo.es/elmundo/2011/11/03/navegante/1320329583.html
And then there was the Vauxhall Nova, which of course means “No Go” in Espanol. Not as funny as Nokia’s blunder though.
How about the new Audi Q3 which just came out
