Alonso opens with a win

FERNANDO Alonso won the opening Formula One race of the season in Bahrain on Sunday.

The Spaniard celebrated his first race with new team Ferrari by collecting 25 points under the new system.

Returning after a four year absence Michael Schumacher finished sixth collecting eight points with world champion Brit Jenson Button finishing one place behind him.

Alonso completed a one-two with team mate Felipe Massa and is now preparing for the next race in Australia in two weeks.

He won the championship in 2005 and 2006 with Renault but has struggled to emulate that form with Mclaren and Renault since then.
