JUDGES at Murcia’s top court have suspended a huge scale golf course and residential project after an appeal by local environmentalists.
The Zerrichera complex, which included 4,000 homes, an 18-hole golf course, a luxury hotel and commercial centre, was being built on 250 hectares of protected land in Almenera, Murcia.
The macro-project, which had the backing of the Partido Popular regional government, was being built by two of Spain’s largest developers: Grupo Inversor Hispania and Inverlur.
Pedro Garcia, from the green group Anse said: “This is an important step in the defence of the nature of this region. The powerful developers cannot destroy the environment.”
A spokesman for the regional government said the legal ruling would not be contested.
