Domestic violence remains rife in Spain

News Domestic violence

AROUND 700 women have been killed in domestic violence cases in Spain over the past 10 years, according to a report.

A million children have been affected over the same time period, and this year alone 46 have been murdered, the national domestic violence centre said.

The centre, set up in 2004 in a bid to combat the problem, said over 600,000 women a year are facing domestic violence, but less than a quarter make an official complaint.

  1. It always creeps me out when I read about the domestic violence problem in Spain. Evidently it isn’t a new phenomena, it’s been going on for centuries, there are jokes and even songs written about it. Dare I say that it’s become something of a dark tradition? It isn’t going away simply because it’s been a part of Spanish society for so long. You combine that with the open and rampant prostitution in Spain, and it really casts a horrid light on their society.

…and don’t even get me started on bullfighting or the Toro de Fuego!

  2. I am Spanish, but I don’t know what .ou are talking about. There’s not such a tradition ib my country. I think this is a global problem not only in Spain and too serious to speak about it without proper knowledge of a culture. About alcohol, well it’s not us WHO are the most drunken famous in Europe, in summer or football matches..

  3. I’m American who has been around the world once or twice, and i have found domestic violence to be a global problem not just Spanish,we need to stand up to this serious global problem,i agree with Amazona, slow down with the ALCOHOL people! chao

  4. the usual idiotic replies: its a global problem, its in other countries as well (all said in whiny voices!)

I DONT CARE if it exists on the other side of the world. I care that it exists here. now.
It most certainly IS a dark tradition (good expression by the way) in spain.
People don’t speak out. and men don’t vocally disapprove of it.

Spain needs more ads on promoting this problem

  5. Only psychological change in the attitude of hubbies towards towards their wives may reduce the domestic
violence. The husbands must have counseling of the psychiatric doctors to change their habits of taking over dozed alcohol and to control their emotions. But it is not an easy task. DRVRao
